Machining and design guidance for ABS engineering plastic used in housings, prototypes, fixtures and general industrial components.

Overview
ABS is an amorphous thermoplastic family combining stiffness, impact performance and relatively easy secondary finishing. It is often considered for opaque housings, covers, jigs and prototype components.
ABS is not one fixed formulation. Impact-modified, flame-retardant, plating and extrusion grades behave differently. Sheet and rod stock may contain stress, and solvent compatibility must be reviewed before bonding or cleaning.
Scope note: This article explains general material behavior. It is not a statement that every form, temper or grade is held in stock. AYBERK confirms sourcing, process capability and project requirements through manual RFQ review.
Material characteristics
Balanced toughness and stiffness
Useful for general housings and prototypes after grade selection.
Secondary finishing
Can be painted or bonded with compatible systems after validation.
Heat and solvent limits
Service temperature and cleaning chemicals must suit the exact grade.
Technical properties
Use values only with the stated alloy condition, product form and source standard. Blank values are intentionally not inferred.

Physical properties

- Low density and electrical insulation are useful, while thermal expansion and heat resistance are lower than metals.

Machinability and process notes
Sharp tools and controlled heat help prevent melting and edge chipping. Thin sections need broad support, and drilling should avoid aggressive breakthrough that can split the exit edge.
Use radiused corners, realistic wall thickness and clearance around fasteners. Validate any solvent bond or coating on the exact stock lot.
Final feeds, speeds, tooling, coolant, workholding and inspection are process decisions made from the drawing and the verified stock. General guidance here does not replace a project-specific manufacturing review.
Typical applications
Equipment housings
Opaque covers and panels with defined cosmetic surfaces.
Prototype components
Fit-check and low-volume functional parts within temperature limits.
Jigs and fixtures
Light-duty nests, spacers and handling aids.
Surface finishing compatibility
As-machined
Define acceptable tool marks and edge break.
Painted
Use a compatible primer and validate adhesion on the selected grade.
Bonded assembly
Select adhesive by grade and environment; manage residual stress.
Advantages and limitations
Advantages
Economical, lightweight, machinable and available in many colors and formulations.
Limitations
UV, heat, flammability and solvent resistance depend on grade; long-term creep limits highly loaded uses.
Design considerations
Specify grade, color, flame/UV requirements and cosmetic criteria. Avoid sharp notches and high sustained clamp loads.
Where properties are safety-critical, specify the governing standard, lot documentation and required test evidence. Dimensional and cosmetic requirements should be separated so they can be inspected at the correct production stage.
Material composition and specification
ABS is a terpolymer system based on acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene, with formulation and additives controlled by the resin grade.
Reference framework: Specify manufacturer grade and stock datasheet; generic classification may reference ISO 2580 The purchase document and material certificate govern; this overview is not a certificate of conformity.

CNC machining recommendations
Use radiused corners, realistic wall thickness and clearance around fasteners. Validate any solvent bond or coating on the exact stock lot.
Geometry-specific decisions include stock allowance, support, cutter reach, burr control, thermal management and the point at which critical dimensions are verified. Share expected quantity and finishing requirements with the drawing.

Material selection guidance
Choose ABS for economical opaque housings and prototypes. Compare PC for higher impact or transparency, POM for low friction and PMMA for optical clarity.
If an alternative is acceptable, state the performance priorities instead of naming an uncontrolled substitute. Any alternative remains subject to customer approval.
