Aluminum 7075

Last updated October 12, 2026

A high-strength aluminum grade used where weight and mechanical performance are priorities.

Overview

7075 is an aluminum-zinc-magnesium-copper alloy selected when a high strength-to-weight ratio is more important than weldability or the broad corrosion tolerance associated with some other aluminum grades. It is often evaluated for highly loaded brackets, structural links, tooling and precision mechanical parts.

Material condition is essential. T6/T651 and over-aged conditions such as T73/T7351 serve different strength, stress-corrosion and stability priorities. A drawing that says only 7075 is incomplete for controlled procurement. Thick-section properties and test direction may differ from thin products.

Scope note: This article explains general material behavior. It is not a statement that every form, temper or grade is held in stock. AYBERK confirms sourcing, process capability and project requirements through manual RFQ review.

Material characteristics

Drawing-led selection

Material is reviewed against function, environment and finishing requirements.

Machining review

Geometry and critical features guide tools, workholding and process planning.

Traceable specification

Customers should state the required grade and any documentation needs on the RFQ.

Technical properties

Use values only with the stated alloy condition, product form and source standard. Blank values are intentionally not inferred.

Physical properties

Reference densityTypical handbook or supplier-datasheet value; not an acceptance limit
approximately 2.81 g/cm³
Physical-property interpretationUse the selected grade datasheet for design calculations
Density remains low relative to steel, while conductivity and corrosion behavior differ from 6061 and change with condition and environment.

Mechanical properties

Mechanical-property interpretationCondition, thickness and test method must be stated
Strength is temper-, thickness- and direction-dependent. Use the applicable standard table and certified product data.

Chemical / composition data

Composition controlASTM B221 or ASTM B209 as applicable to product form; confirm alloy, temper, thickness and certification
7075 is based on aluminum with zinc and magnesium as principal strengthening additions plus copper and controlled minor elements. Acceptance limits come from the applicable product standard and certificate.

Machinability and process notes

7075 can machine cleanly with sharp tools and effective chip evacuation. Because high-strength stock may retain residual stress, large asymmetric pockets and thin walls benefit from staged roughing, part relaxation and a separate finish operation.

Keep cross sections balanced, add practical corner radii and avoid removing most stock from only one face. Protect cosmetic surfaces and consider anodizing allowance and masking before final dimensions are released.

Final feeds, speeds, tooling, coolant, workholding and inspection are process decisions made from the drawing and the verified stock. General guidance here does not replace a project-specific manufacturing review.

Typical applications

Precision components

Drawing-led parts for industrial and engineering programs.

Prototype validation

Functional parts for fit, assembly and performance review.

Repeat production

Documented batches with consistent process planning.

Surface finishing compatibility

Anodizing

Define type, color, masking and dimensional effect; appearance can differ from 6061.

Conversion coating

Considered for protective or electrical-interface requirements.

As-machined

Useful for functional prototypes when environmental protection is not required.

Advantages and limitations

Advantages

High specific strength, good machinability and availability in aerospace-oriented forms make 7075 useful for demanding lightweight structures.

Limitations

Weldability and general corrosion resistance are less favorable than 6061, and material cost and certification requirements can be higher. Finish color may vary by alloy and lot.

Design considerations

State the required temper and standard, identify load direction and critical fatigue or corrosion conditions, and avoid geometry that creates severe stress concentration. Do not substitute 6061 or another temper without engineering approval.

Where properties are safety-critical, specify the governing standard, lot documentation and required test evidence. Dimensional and cosmetic requirements should be separated so they can be inspected at the correct production stage.

CNC machining recommendations

Keep cross sections balanced, add practical corner radii and avoid removing most stock from only one face. Protect cosmetic surfaces and consider anodizing allowance and masking before final dimensions are released.

Geometry-specific decisions include stock allowance, support, cutter reach, burr control, thermal management and the point at which critical dimensions are verified. Share expected quantity and finishing requirements with the drawing.

Material selection guidance

Choose 7075 for strength-driven aluminum parts after confirming corrosion protection and joining strategy. Choose 6061 for a more general balance of machining, corrosion resistance and welding; choose 5052 for bent sheet structures.

If an alternative is acceptable, state the performance priorities instead of naming an uncontrolled substitute. Any alternative remains subject to customer approval.
