Machining guidance for PA6 nylon parts where toughness, wear, moisture conditioning and dimensional change must be considered.

Nylon pa6 machined guide block

Overview

PA6 is a polyamide engineering plastic valued for toughness, fatigue resistance and wear performance. It is used for rollers, gears, guides, bushings and structural plastic parts in appropriate environments.

Moisture absorption is a primary design issue. Conditioned PA6 can change dimensions and mechanical behavior compared with dry stock. Cast and extruded stock, filled grades and heat-stabilized formulations are not interchangeable.

Scope note: This article explains general material behavior. It is not a statement that every form, temper or grade is held in stock. AYBERK confirms sourcing, process capability and project requirements through manual RFQ review.

Material characteristics

Tough and wear resistant

Useful for dynamic machine elements within load, speed and temperature limits.

Moisture responsive

Dimensions and properties change with humidity and conditioning.

Creep under sustained load

Long-term stress requires lower allowable loading than short-term tests imply.

Technical properties

Use values only with the stated alloy condition, product form and source standard. Blank values are intentionally not inferred.

Machinability and process notes

Sharp tools, low heat and broad support help PA6 machine cleanly. Internal stress in stock may release after heavy cuts, and flexible features can deflect during measurement.

State the service humidity and conditioning basis. Provide clearance for swelling, avoid thin unsupported walls and use inserts or generous engagement for repeated fasteners.

Final feeds, speeds, tooling, coolant, workholding and inspection are process decisions made from the drawing and the verified stock. General guidance here does not replace a project-specific manufacturing review.

Typical applications

Rollers and guides

Wear components with load, speed and moisture review.

Gears and bushings

Dynamic parts with adequate clearance and lubrication strategy.

Structural plastic parts

Brackets and supports within creep and temperature limits.

Surface finishing compatibility

As-machined

Preferred for most functional surfaces.

Conditioning

Moisture conditioning may be required before final dimensional acceptance.

Marking

Grade-dependent mechanical or laser identification.

Advantages and limitations

Advantages

Toughness, fatigue behavior, low friction and wear performance support moving and structural plastic components.

Limitations

Moisture-driven dimensional change, creep and heat limits can prevent precision substitution for POM or metal.

Design considerations

Specify PA6 grade, filler, stock process and conditioning. Dimension and inspect at an agreed moisture state when fit is critical.

Where properties are safety-critical, specify the governing standard, lot documentation and required test evidence. Dimensional and cosmetic requirements should be separated so they can be inspected at the correct production stage.

CNC machining recommendations

State the service humidity and conditioning basis. Provide clearance for swelling, avoid thin unsupported walls and use inserts or generous engagement for repeated fasteners.

Geometry-specific decisions include stock allowance, support, cutter reach, burr control, thermal management and the point at which critical dimensions are verified. Share expected quantity and finishing requirements with the drawing.

Material selection guidance

Choose PA6 for tough wear parts where moisture change can be managed. Compare POM for better humidity stability and PC for impact-resistant housings.

If an alternative is acceptable, state the performance priorities instead of naming an uncontrolled substitute. Any alternative remains subject to customer approval.
