Stainless Steel 201
Last updated October 12, 2026
Sheet-metal guidance for 201 austenitic stainless steel, with forming, work hardening, corrosion and finish limitations clearly separated.

Overview
201 is an austenitic stainless grade using manganese and nitrogen to replace part of the nickel used in 304. It can provide useful strength, formability and appearance for selected indoor or mild-service sheet-metal applications.
201 should not be presented as equivalent to 304 in corrosion performance. Supplier quality, cold work, finish and exposure influence the result. The exact grade must be confirmed by certificate because visual appearance alone cannot distinguish it reliably.
Scope note: This article explains general material behavior. It is not a statement that every form, temper or grade is held in stock. AYBERK confirms sourcing, process capability and project requirements through manual RFQ review.
Material characteristics
Cost-sensitive stainless option
Can reduce nickel dependence for suitable environments.
Work hardening
Forming and machining increase hardness and springback.
Corrosion limits
Generally less corrosion resistant than 304, especially in aggressive environments.
Technical properties
Use values only with the stated alloy condition, product form and source standard. Blank values are intentionally not inferred.

- Annealed or cold-worked sheet condition confirmed
Physical properties
- Reference densityTypical handbook or supplier-datasheet value; not an acceptance limit

- Thermal expansion and conductivity resemble other austenitic stainless families and affect forming/welding distortion.
Mechanical properties

- 201 is a chromium-manganese-nickel austenitic stainless grade with nitrogen and controlled carbon/impurity limits.
Machinability and process notes
201 work-hardens and generates heat. For sheet fabrication, cutting edges, bend tooling, springback and scratch protection require control. Avoid rubbing cuts and contaminated handling.
Use realistic bend radii, plan springback and keep holes away from bends. Identify whether indoor appearance or actual corrosion performance is the selection driver.
Final feeds, speeds, tooling, coolant, workholding and inspection are process decisions made from the drawing and the verified stock. General guidance here does not replace a project-specific manufacturing review.
Typical applications
Indoor panels
Decorative or protective sheet parts in controlled environments.
Appliance structures
Formed components after corrosion and cleaning review.
General brackets
Cost-sensitive stainless supports with verified grade.
Surface finishing compatibility
Brushed finish
Define grain direction, protective film and cosmetic acceptance.
Polished finish
Specify visual or roughness criteria and protected surfaces.
Passivation
Use a controlled procedure appropriate to the grade and fabrication history.
Advantages and limitations
Advantages
Useful strength, stainless appearance and formability for appropriate mild-service applications.
Limitations
Lower corrosion margin than 304, strong work hardening and potential confusion from unverified material identity.
Design considerations
State 201 and the governing standard, finish, environment, weld condition and protective handling. Do not substitute it for 304 without approval.
Where properties are safety-critical, specify the governing standard, lot documentation and required test evidence. Dimensional and cosmetic requirements should be separated so they can be inspected at the correct production stage.
Material composition and specification
201 is a chromium-manganese-nickel austenitic stainless grade with nitrogen and controlled carbon/impurity limits.
Reference framework: ASTM A240 for sheet/plate where applicable, with grade, condition, finish and certificate The purchase document and material certificate govern; this overview is not a certificate of conformity.

CNC machining recommendations
Use realistic bend radii, plan springback and keep holes away from bends. Identify whether indoor appearance or actual corrosion performance is the selection driver.
Geometry-specific decisions include stock allowance, support, cutter reach, burr control, thermal management and the point at which critical dimensions are verified. Share expected quantity and finishing requirements with the drawing.

Material selection guidance
Choose 201 only when exposure and lifecycle requirements permit. Use 304 where broader corrosion resistance is required and cold-rolled steel where coating is acceptable.
If an alternative is acceptable, state the performance priorities instead of naming an uncontrolled substitute. Any alternative remains subject to customer approval.
